WHO ARE THE GARDEN PEOPLE?
We are community volunteers who have New York City Parks Department permission
to plant and maintain a flower garden between 90th and 91st Streets, in the middle
level of Riverside Park. Our garden began in 1977 under the auspices of the
West 97-98 Streets Block Association. We first planted in a then-vacant lot at
Broadway and 96th Street, where the Columbia Condominium now stands. When the
bulldozers came in 1981, we sought and received NYC Parks Department permission
to start a new garden in our current spot in Riverside Park. Since 1984, the garden
has been operated by The Garden People, Inc., a NY State not-for-profit corporation,
which is managed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership.
WHAT WE DO The Garden People assigns individual garden plots
to members who want to cultivate them. Priority is given to those members who
have demonstrated their interest and responsibility by a consistent performance
of volunteer work in the garden. We grow a wide variety of perennial and annual
flowering plants and some herbs. But, vegetables are not permitted. Many of
the members use organic methods to enrich the soil and most avoid the use of chemical
pesticides. We take pride in our use of compost from our own compost pile.
